CMHA Recognizes International Self-Care Day

CMHA Grey Bruce joins individuals and organizations around the globe in celebrating International Self-Care Day on July 24, which aims to raise public awareness of the importance of self-care to stay healthy and prevent or delay illness. This year’s choice of themes includes ‘Self-Care is for Life,’ ‘Get Better with Self-Care’ and “Treat Yourself to Better Health.”

Mental well-being is recognized as a pillar of self-care. Prioritizing self-care can increase resiliency, which can be helpful when faced with problems, stress, and other difficult situations. Many mental health programs provide strategies to improve resiliency skills like problem-solving, assertiveness, balancing obligations and expectations, and developing support networks.

CMHA Grey Bruce offers a wonderful program called “WRAP” which stands for “Wellness Recovery Action Plan”. “WRAP is a system for monitoring, and responding to uncomfortable or dangerous physical symptoms and emotional feelings. WRAP is a useful tool for those looking to create positive change in their life, to increase wellness through pain management (physical and psychological) and even decrease occurrence rates of acute episodes of certain illnesses. WRAP goes beyond simply learning self-help skills and encourages and allows its author to incorporate these skills into daily living, rather than to rely on them only in a time of crisis.”
